Personally I would invest some time in working out why your laptop is slowing to a crawl, as I suspect this has nothing to do with Windows 7. Windows 7 is a perfectly stable and usable operating system which should perform well on any suitable hardware.
Apologies if you have tried these already, but if you haven't I would suggest you variously:
- Run an anti-virus check
- Run the various diagnostic tools that come with Windows to see if they can identify what is causing the performance issue
- Remove any crapware that came with your laptop
- Download and run a tool like ccleaner which will clean up your registry and remove unwanted programmes from your startup routine

Win7 should be slick on most systems, you have something wrong with your installation. 4gig should allow it to fly.
Reinstall and it'll be fine.
Linux is great, but most people who run it spend a lot of time trying to make it look and feel like windows and run windows software through wine. Macs are over priced pieces of bling with an OS that frankly leaves a lot to be desired.
Stick with win7.

Well I'm back and on 7 the Ubuntu download didnt get off the ground, I even had to resort to getting the missus to download a distro........even that didnt work, so I have reinstalled 7 after Ubuntu completely trashed my laptop and somehow deleted the partition that had 7 on it and lost all my files.......great
All my photos of my son in Afghanistan wiped, all my bike photos wiped.......everything, so in future I will be sticking with 7

Possibly a bad download, I let it do what it had to but everytime it came to the reboot (after 3 downloads) it got stuck in the post boot screen with loads of errors

Anyhow now 7 has been reinstalled and its running with minimal software installed for now........its flying along nicely again, I think malwarebytes was the problem as thats no longer installed and its got MS security essentials as protection, all my drivers installed from the cloud apart from audio which is taking an age from Realtek but everything else inc fingerprint was installed smoothly.

That's awful. Were they the only copies you had of your photos. It is easy in hindsight, but I don't keep any photos on my computer that I cannot afford to lose. I have them on online storage, and really important ones I have copies on DVD's as well.
How did you manage to wipe your W7 partition. When I installed Ubuntu (like you, now gone back to Windows 7) it allowed me to choose and set a size for the partitions and ran both systems, W7 and Ubuntu side by side, the required one selected at boot-up.

I have them on Flickr and Photobucket Compo so its not all doom n gloom mate, will have to download them all back onto HDD which will take some time

As long as they are not using the petrol pumps for target practice. I like the Christmas tree! I am glad you can recover your photos. I have lots from my Legion days and would be desolate if I lost them.

The .50 is targetting the pickup, the GPMG is targetting the pump to stop them driving to the Jackal they were in
