520 reynolds is same as 4130. It will be more comfy but heavier than aluminium. I would go for steel but I'm biased towards it. Also my last 2 bikes out of 3 have been genesis (equilibrium and croix de fer) and both have been nothing but spectacular.

I wouldn't worry about weight. Looking at your picture, you've shed enough as it is!

But from a quick look, it seems to be about a kilo heavier 9.5kg (genesis) to 8.5 (specalized).

Edit: You thought about picking up a cheap old lightweight 531c frame and doing a fixie conversion. I bought a bike and thinking about doing it, the bike cost me 100 quid, I can sell the campag parts for that. Then all I need is new drivetrain and wheelset! Should get a very light fixie for under 400!

I'd like a full steel bike but it's hard finding an affordable hybrid.

The only one I know of is the Jamis Coda Sport with 520 Reynolds.

there is no guarantee a steel frame will be any more or less comfy than an aluminium one. It's all way more complex than that.

I'd choose steel, am a recent convert after riding an newish aluminium bike back to back with an old steel bike, the difference was sublime, for me it translated into a gliding almost frictionless feeling whereas the alubobuluminium was harsh and passed on every bump to my contact points.

I'd love to read about a controlled blind test using a well designed well engineered ali frame of equivalent quality/geometry to the steel one, swapping the same bars, stem, seat post, wheels, tyres, fork, saddle, between the two, riding over the same roads 'blind' et cetera, et cetera. All to often I read about subjective comparisons of aluminium apples with a sublime steel satsumas.

My own conclusion is that a well designed bike well matched to the riding you want to do on it with well engineered frame that fits the rider properly renders the choice of frame material pretty moot these days, and the differences are most likely less sublime than subliminal. ;)
