I know I posted about this the first time I saw this film but..... go and hire the DVD of Amélie. It's a wonderful, amusing, happy film with the gorgeous Audrey Tatou. I watched it again yesterday and can't think of a better way to pass the time on a wet Saturday afternoon. I just want to go to Paris now! (Used to live there but never saw the parts depicted in the film). Typically of French films it's mostly about relationships, something like the films of Eric Rohmner but much more colourful and quirky.

Here's the trailer in French:

Get it and watch it, you'll love it.

Micmacs by the same director is also worth watching.

I've seen Amélie several times. Agree, it's a superb comedy/romcom, full of the sort of banal humour they really only do well in France - yes worth a watch! My particular coffee-spilling moments are the 'travelling gnome' stuff and all that business with the photo booth. If anything could possibly be as funny as Gregor Fisher sitting in a photo booth, this is it!

Yep. Go thou and watch likewise!

I'll have to watch that.......

As a tip, watched 'Priceless' on BBC iPlayer. Brilliant french film about a gold digger.

...and which, of course, also stars the gorgeous Audrey Tatou, who is also superb in Dirty Pretty Things, Coco avant Chanel and the second film she did with Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Un long dimanche de fiancailles (A Very Long Engagement).

For fans of Amelie, that last one is a must. It mixes in a lot more serious stuff but has that same ultimately life-affirming charm, nostalgia and optimism. From a different French director, but with the same kind of take on life, I would also recommend Faubourg 36 (sometimes called Paris 36 in English)...

Thanks for reminding me. I remember the posters were all over the place when I was at Uni but I never got round to seeing it. I do remember the poster always looked like she was staring at you (quite spooky in the dark): -

I've had Amilie on DVD for years... got round to watching it again last week and had forgotten just how enjoyable it is.

The soundtrack works as a stand alone lp too... and A Very Long Engagement is highly recommended; a post world war one drama also staring audry tautou

My sister is a pretty good pianist. She loves Amélie so for her birthday this year I have got her the piano music by Yiann Tiersen. Lest year I got her a book of Helen Jane Long piano music, which she has played incessantly so this will be a bit of a change for her long-suffering family.

Wilpshire, just outside Blackburn and in the Ribble Valley by the skin of our teeth!

I cycled up to Windermere last summer passing right through Lancaster. It was an easy trip up the A6 until the last 7 miles through the Lake District fells.

the most scenic 7 miles though? I love the section between Kendal & Windermere where it gets more and more knobly every mile

If you go to Monmatre you can have a drink in the cafe where she works , a go on the Merry go Round and even visit the grocers .
