We get tips on the recycling -

I used to leave a tip for the dustmen ...but stopped more recently as there are so many of them ... as we have 5 different collection lorries come around (general waste, tins/bottles etc, plastics, garden waste/cardboard, and food waste).

I used to go for meals in groups and it was always the same , two groups , the tippers and the tight wads, stopped doing it as was fed up with them almost getting a calculator out just in case they spend a penny more than exactly what they had had.

I would leave them two who complained out next time ,, give them something to really moan about as they sit at home while you tuck in

Certainly in the retail world it would be very unlikely that anyone would tip, even if they did have a very enjoyable shopping experience. Why should the catering industry be any different?

I would imagine that a lot of retail employees get a staff discount though (I know we did at Iceland), so they get a benefit in a different way.

Having worked in retail, albeit the relatively easy supermarket sort, as opposed to a shop where you have to run around after customers (like a shoe shop), I'd say it was easier than waiting. If I was looking for a job of that sort now, I'd much prefer retail. The only sort of waiting I'd ever want to do would be in a genteel tea shop or something like that.

I wouldn't be able to resist telling people how the most ridiculous one they tried on suited them down to the ground, then making a self-gratification artist sign at them as they left while grinning at the other salespeople.

Smoking Joe, most of the customers were ladies, choosing hats for a wedding. I can see that would not be your first choice for a Saturday job.

It was not so much telling them which one suited them, as helping to find the one that liked best. They might decide on a bright fuschia one, but then want one with a wider brim or a more turned up brim. I saved them searching under the counter for their ideal hat.

I worked at Comet when it was a big shed and you bought items without seeing them You just got to see the outside of the box. Sometimes we would put the odd item on display if there was comission on it. It was good fun and we often got tips if we helped buyers out to their car with the big items.

Next year Kitty, come out with me...It was my works do last night too, lovely food , plenty of drink , all payed for by Mr Boss. We all chipped in for tips tho so the 2 waitresses who looked after us got £50 each as they were very good and we certainly didnt make their job easy that night .

Tightwads, but i'm not surprised. You see it whenever you have a works do.
I like to tip 10%, give or take, but it can go wrong...
Working in Uruguay, taxi driver picked us up every day for 10 days then the same at night. We were travelling about 1.5 hours every day. We decided to tip him well when we left because he'd always been there when we needed him, always friendly etc etc. We put all our surplus pesos together and dumped it in his lap...it worked out to well over a weeks wages (we didnt realise it at the time ). He was flabbergated and slightly embarrassed but we insisted...take your wife out for a good meal or something
It went wrong, but in a nice way...

I like the idea of a tipping plate at the bar/till. I like to think it all gets shared between the people behind the scenes as well. It slightly irks me to tip the waiter, thinking he's going to pocket it and the cooks etc get nothing. Perhaps i'm over analysing it.

Many many years ago I worked in a cabaret function room. As a waitress we were supposed to hand all our tips in at the end of the night so they could be pooled and divided equally among waitresses and bar staff. Which I duly did. Only many years later did I find out that my friend who also worked there always pocketed the majority of her tips! Unfair I thought and still think to this day!
