Am I selfish?

To go with the new bike storage at work, I got a new lock delivered to the office (a Kypto New York one) to leave at work. The bike cage has got lots of room but at the moment only 4 securing points. There only me who cycles everyday (year round) and sometimes 2 others, and 9 out of 10 times I'm first in (once this week I've been second).
As I got it delivered to the office a colleague (who doesn't cycle) saw it and and when he found out what I wanted to do said it was selfish; am I selfish?

I assume you mean to leave the lock attached to the bike cage where you park your bike?

You mean should you use the secure storage instead of trusting a decent lock in the bike sheds?

Hell YEAH!!!!!! Why don't you just tell your collegue that he is being selfish by NOT cycling to work

I never use the bike lock ups at work as they are absolute shite. I crept to my boss, giving it loads about the value of my bike and how I have to rely on it blah blah. As a resut, I have access to the main substation with my own key and everything. I don't even share it!!!!!

The above post is assuming I got your OP right....

You mean you wanted to leave your lock locked to one of the securing points? That's not selfish, because if I was a colleague and parking there, and your lock spot was the only one left, I'd just lock my bike there and expect you to move the lock when you arrived. It's not as though you're reserving a spot after all. Is that fair?

Ohhhh I was completely off track there.

Still, same answer applies. No you're not being selfish and yes, leave the lock there.

Tell you non cycling collegue to butt out and and do one, it's your bike. If it bothers you why not ask the other collegues that cycle whether they mind.

What I find in my place is that people, probably those living in one bed flats with nowhere to keep their bikes, just leave them locked at work the whole year round and occasionally take them home for the weekend.

Annoying to those of us who do cycle all year round, but I do, grudgingly, understand why they do it.

Yes, we get this at work as well. The bike next to me belongs to a lawyer, who shall remain unnamed, but his bike is there every day and most nights. This is a man who gifts out of date food and drink to people and likes to do a bit of swinging - someone said something about horses and gymkhanas in a field naked but I didn't understand.

Totally OTT, but there's a brand new Birdy in the bike stand opposite that I have been looking at longingly.

Ditto - it happens to me regularly at which point I curse myself for having a lie-in

Of course your not being selfish, as BentMikey points out your leaving a very hefty lock at work not reserving a space fairly standard practice.
Slightly OT I went ballistic recently when I heard we were going to lose our excellent cycle lockers. It turned out that they are being relocated. A secure cycle cage is being added next to them for staff who prefer not to fork up £50pa for a locker. The reason for the move? So they can add more student cycle stands where the lockers were. Nice one!

Lost count of how many times I've ignored locks left on a bike rack and just locked my bike up there. No more effective than leaving a towel on a sun lounger.

Ah well, I got into the office to same lecture, at one point he said it sounds really petty, I said "listen to your self", he didn't like it and sent an email to the director/ big boss. I saw the boss later on and he never even mentioned it, just smiled. Anyway I have to sit next to this bloke and can't be bothered with that every morning and left my lock somewhere out of sight tonight.

No it's not selfish. They guy has a problem.

Is there somewhere else close at had that you can fasten the lock to when you leave? Petty spineless turds are quite likely to indulge in petty minded games; like scratching frames or letting down tyres etc.

After some searching I found an old pipe in the shed that was out of sight and locked it to that, I couldn't be bothered with another petty lecture.
