The fair Mrs v R would like to visit the Amalfi coast. From a climate point of view, when would be a good time to visit? We would probably do a coach jobbie as airports seriously PMO!! From those that may have done it, any recommendations?

Beautiful area. Fly to Sorrento and base yourself there then take the catamarans along the coastline.

Visit Positano and Capri as they are really lovely. The roads along the coast are hairy so by sea is much more relaxing and the views stunning.

June or September are good months to visit.

We stayed in Sorrento June this year, sunny and around 30 degrees, We did the Amalfi Coast by local bus, Positano is an amazing place, Amalfi itself has a huge Cathedral and is well worth a visit Pompeii is more like a tourist attracltion than an archaeologal site, Hurculanium is smaller and well worth a visit.

Did you "do your own thing", or was it an organised jobbie?

We mixed it up, did Pompeii Herculaneum and Capri on organized trips but did The Amalfi Coast Positano and Amalfi on our own, we found the organized trips were expensive. The mistake we made was to do Pompeii and Herculaneum on the same day, Pompeii is a huge place and can be very busy, we learnt more at Herculaneum where it was smaller quieter and the guide could take a bit more time.

We did 10 days this September and the weather was good (32 degrees around the 15th!). Herculaneum and a walk to the top of Vesuvius make a good day, as said above we preferred Herculaneum to Pompeii but they are both worth a visit.

Capri is also worth a visit but can be expensive, we stayed one night in a nice apartment that cost 100€. The drive along the Amalfi coast is spectacular but the traffic is horrendous - a group of cyclists overtook us and we never caught them up! We were on a fly drive and booking as we went using TripAdvisor, so it is possible to do it at a reasonable cost.

Enjoy!

We stayed near the Pompei ruins, was during August and the weather was very hot, whatever you do, DO NOT DRIVE, when you get there you will see why, every car is a wreck, the driving is worse than appalling.
Pompei is large, but is fascinating, then visit Herculanium it is so well preserved, it's mind blowing.
Sorrento is beautiful, as is Capri , the ferry to the island goes in the morning and returns in the evening, take a taxi up to the town, it's a hell of a walk in the heat, also do the trip up to Vesuvius, part way up in a Unimog bus, then walk the rest, the views are amazing.
For getting around the coast the circumvesuviana railway from Naples to Sorrento is good and inexpensive, if you go to Naples keep your wits about you, the risk of being robbed is very real, even in the railway station, I lost count of the number of ipads & mobiles we were offered.

Capri's a good day out as long as you don't get a rough crossing.

We went on a hydrofoil and Mrs Stephec was sick on the way back as it was bouncing all over the place.

Nice place, but it was really busy when we were there, from memory I think it was July though.
