I think Webster has a lot to answer for. He made a few spelling changes along phonetic lines but only ended up tinkering with the system, which was never ever going to become anything more than nominally phonetic. This has led to not one confused spelling system but to a permanent crossover between two confused spelling systems and a great deal of uncertainty between which is which. He's also largely responsible for the disappearance of useful spelling variations for homonyms (curb/kerb, tire/tyre, check/cheque, etc).

At least he failed to get tung accepted as the new spelling for tongue.

I see HMQEII is about to issue the USA with a proclamation that if Romney wins she is withdrawing the right to independence on the grounds of insanity.

Gee
Do you mean your zucchini or your courgettes? Or your baby marrows?
Could be eggplant already.

Going back to Shiner though, when it's 110 you just need a cold one, who cares about anything else.

I got no beef with the Yanks beyond the nasal whining they call 'language' and the lard sodden mess they call 'food'. Aside from that I quite like em.

To be fair the Americans live in perpetual awe of our better food, cars, language, weather, television, military, women, legal system, political system, motorbikes, music, literature, history, etc, so you gotta feel a little sorry for them.

Food, I can buy better and cheaper food faster and more conveniently than any place in the UK.
Cars, what cars, a couple of high sports cars that nobody can afford, just some toys.
Language, yea right, I'm from Cornwall and know how we love to feck up our own language.
Weather, today is 78f with clear skies, I'm so not missing the UK today.
Television, maybe, BBC still rocks.
Military, about the same
Women, about the same
Legal system, as scaring as the US system can be, it's easier to get help here than in the UK
Political system, well yes, the system here is fecked
Motorbikes, maybe 100 years ago
Music, maybe 50 years ago
Literature, maybe 400 years ago
History, maybe 1000 years ago and who's making history today, not the UK
