There was a public transport strike in Amsterdam on Tuesday which resulted inthe Ij ferries not sailing. These ferries run a near constant shuttle service across the Ij from Centraal Station and carry vast numbers of commuters on foot and on two wheels. Motorists use the Ij tunnel for the crossing.
Faced with the commuters transferring to cars and causing congestion in and around the Ij tunnel, the authorities chose to close the tunnel to motor traffic and open it to cyclists.
A bold move which appears to have paid off.

For anyone interested in public transport and utility cycling, a visit to this ferry terminal behind the Centraal Station in Amsterdam at rush hour makes an interesting spectacle.

I bet they weren't as excited going up the other side.^_^

Must be nice living in a city that actually considers cyclists like that especially to come up with such a response as a reaction to industrial action.
