I seem to remember hearing of a railway in Switzerland (I forget the details now) with the rather unfortunate acronym of 'FART'.

That is Locarno. It stands for Ferrovie Autolinee Regionali Ticinesi, the regional bus and rail Company in Locarno, in the Canton of Ticino. This includes the Locarno to Domodossola line (Centovalli or Centovallina), which is a very scenic railway line, and is probably where you have seen FART.

A friend of a friend is a doctor and he once told me of a number of acronyms they use in patient notes to informally and succinctly convey the prognosis to other medics without alerting the patients and their relatives.

Unfortunately the only one I can remember is the one you really don't want to have on your notes is FB, as this stands for Fridge Bound!!!!

There was a thing we had that went by the acronym P.I.S. Which is OK. But then we wanted to extract some data from it. The resulting system was nearly called the PIS extract, and then somebody noticed that that would be taking the .... it's called something else now.
