Amy and Kyle's Around the world challenge

The bikes are in for a service in Perth and they're waiting 'til Monday to set off due to a storm with winds in the range 43-67kph (current forecast). Pretty unfortunate to arrive with that happening, though they're apparently still three days up on their (Amy's!) rather arbitrary 150 day schedule, so quite possibly the additional recovery time will be more useful than cycling the intended 50km this afternoon.

New tyres all around. These are Gravelking + (Instagram photos of the service). I wonder if the first set were also the plus version?

They have had 50 punctures, an average of one every 130km. Wow!
I'm not following but are they separate punctures or are they re-reporting previous incidents multiple times as they are maybe an "event" to put online where hour after hour of uneventful cycling doesn't get online clicks?

Or, if really that many I'd be wondering about something in the tyre re-puncturing eg leave the thorn embedded in the tyre when you patch the inner tube and you'll likely get another puncture after not long.

That many punctures one starts to question their repair competency.

Given how many miles they cycle suspect the loads and temperatures they have been cycling in will have contributed to many plus on very busy roads keeping virtually in the gutter and the accumulated grot.

I looking to do significant miles daily any breakdown can have an impact you really don't want. Wouldn't it make sense to have slimed inner tubes?

I don't use it myself as I want to know if/when I get a puncture and do a 100% repair but I'm not pushing the miles and ot time constrained. But I don't appreciate the negative aspects to slime (eg rolling resistance, weight, etc.

Even if you replace slimed inned tubes every service stop, not expensive and get away with carrying fewer puncture repair kits.

In 29,000km, the impact of the increase in rolling resistance, in particular, would be rather large in time terms. If you don't want to be impacted by that, surely that's a very good reason *not* to use them over a huge distance?

15 punctures, meaning a new tube is what, and hour and a half or so, perhaps 2 - after all, they've now practiced! Slower tyres would cost way more time. Yep, they may have found the sweet spot.

That’s an interesting way of looking at it. How much extra rolling resistance equals 2-3 hours of roadside repair? But the biggest impact of their punctures is most likely on Kyle’s patience!
