If you switch it to wind they are making use of a tail wind rather than battling a cross wind

As @Ming the Merciless said above, I think their antipodal point is Alaejos (antipodal of Wellington), so they're presumably going to skirt well to the NW of Madrid, also cutting off some distance.

Cutting across to Alaejos will cut many 100s of kms off their planned route, I thought they might have done that.

Their course map has been changed, and now excludes the NW loop in Spain, although it still has a strange loop south of Bordeaux. Going by their past courses they have used, it seem to be a guide only and they tend to avoid heavy traffic as much as possible, even if it means some rougher roads.
