An Apology To Everyone On Cyclechat

Hi All

I have stated that the police would take no action whatsoever if you tried to report a road traffic incident to them in which there was no damage to property, or injury to persons. Other posters argued that reporting such incidents could be beneficial and that they would be recorded. In my defence (you're honor)I was talking from previous experience.

Regarding this incident

http://www.cyclechat.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=12842&highlight=twickenhamcyclist

I did report it, and today, received a letter from the police stating that, although they would be taking no further action, they had talked to the driver about the incident and would keep a record of my allegations.

Although I have still had no response regarding cycling incidents (the one above was in a car) I’d like to apologise to anyone I have deterred from contacting the police, and would also like to apologise to anyone else who had put forward an opposing view to mine. They did take action this time. I was wrong in my origional statements/views.

I’m now off to eat a huge portion of humble pie - on my own… … …

Well done you.

Er, but that was an incident where you were driving your car. What's that got to do with cyclists? We already know that there is no prejudice against car drivers from the police.

Dom – you’re right – but I had argued that any incident reporting had resulted in no action taken by the police, while others had said that they had reported incidents when cycling, that had resulted in a minor result (like my driving one).
Don’t get me wrong – I still think that cyclists are seen by the police/judiciary as less equal to other road users, but I wanted to acknowledge that incidents where there is no physical evidence can be followed up by the police.

Thinking about it more dom – what I’m trying to say is that I actually take notice of the views and advice posted on this forum – I find both the members and debate on cyclechat (and formally on c plus) to be, in the main, both informative and intellectually stimulating (sounds like a cliché I know, but look at most other forums). If I had received lots of advice from members here NOT to report things to the police because it was pointless, I would probably have taken notice, so I’m just trying to add to the debate and set the record straight...

Ps- your avatar is rather scarey!

You can always share a piece of that pie for me -I inevitably end up having a piece now and again.

Glad to hear that hopefully something came of it. Let's just hope he doesn't keep driving like that.

Twix, it is very easy to be despondent and deeply cynical after an experience like that. All faith in human nature goes out the window and reflects in our reactions to events.

I'm glad you've had a shift in thinking as it is better all round and easy tiger, don't be so hard on yourself.
