An interesting day for commuting!

So I left the house today, seemed like a normal overcast day. Roads were slightly damp, but not enough to cause any spray off the tires. Part of my commute involves cycling a country lane over a hill around 600ft in height, and back down the other side through a small village.

I had cycled up the hill uneventfully as per usual, however was feeling unusually tired for this point, so allowed myself to coast down the hill in semi-autopilot mode. When reaching around 25mph, I noticed the roads get a little more damp, but thought nothing of it, and within 100 feet (and around a sharp corner) I found myself sliding around in an inch of snowy/icy/watery slush on 23mm slick tires!

I tapped the brakes, however the rims had obviously become wet as they didn't engage for a good few seconds. Thankfully the tires held on to the road well enough for me to control my speed, and I was able to rescue a situation that could have been potentially much worse! Strange that within a hundred feet the road conditions changed so dramatically, and with no real warning.

On the way home I got the full force of the weather. A heavy sleety/haily/rainy mixture along with cold winds, and to top it off, I had forgotten my gloves. Brr! Someone tell Scotland they can have their weather back!

Got caught in the hail storm, damn that stung! Generally love riding in the winter though, bring on the snow!

We have strong winds up here, snow or atleast sleet is forecast, dont understand where the strong winds are coming from recently though, not typical december weather at all

Been surprisingly nice in Manchester, if cold. Light wind this morning after a stormy night, but the wind has picked up again - right fight back to the office just now. Nice tailwind home. Might be very cold tonight !

Missed the rain thankfully , cycled 10 miles in to the headwind and i did not get into the big ring all the way home.Toes were frozen even with overshoes on as the wind chill was bitter !!

Looked out the door at 6.50am, not the damp that had been forecast... it arrived 2 minutes after I'd left the house in a horizontal style. Feirce cold winds, I enjoyed it really. It was the day to try my new overshoes, they were fantastic! Feet like toast
My lad cycled in an hour later, no rain, no wind. Not fair!

Time to swap

Time to swap your tyres methinks. I've just swapped bikes (road to hybrid) as I'm pretty sure Winter is here and I just can't gamble any longer.

Mind you, if I lived in Scotland I'd have swapped over a lot earlier.....doesn't Winter usually start in August up there?

I have an MTB sitting on standby with suitable tires which I would normally take at the first sign of snow/ice. This morning the temperature was hovering around 4 degrees however, and the roads were fine around my house. No way I would ever have guessed that I'd come across what I did only a few miles away!

15 miles back into the headwind was good training, especially as I could only get my rear tyre to 70 psi after puncture this morning. Will pop into LBS tomorrow for more tubes and a CO2 thingie. Was nice to be dry in both directions though.

Have put my roadie away for the winter and am now out on the cross bike, hopefully I should get a bit more purchase on the icy roads. Decided it was time when I went out on Sat morning and every hill I attempted involved massive amounts of wheel spin. Besides, I fancy a bit of off road action...
