My two teenage children have been scouring the charity shops today.i have been given a very special gift.A copy of David Copperfield,by a certain CD.This is my favourite CD book.It was a Christmas gift in 1940 from Barbara to Brenda.
1940 during the War.What a story this could tell.So Barbara,Brenda,Charlotte and Dan i will cherish this book, and i will remember Dan bought this book just days before he leaves for University.

I read the title of this thread as 'An old git'

I can only apologise, Postie :giggle:

Ha ha, so did I - it was the only reason I looked!

I do like to see old dedications in books.

I have an old book describing needlework stitches - as well as a dedication in the front there are a few pages marked with slips of paper where the owner has made notes about using the stitches. Obviously used & loved.

I had a very old copy of The Canterbury Tales that had been given to me by an Aunt, when I was about 14. She thought that I would be studying it at O level. I didn't, but did at degree level and the jottings in the margins and the notes that were in the back, all hand written, where invaluable to me. I passed the book on to my God Daughter (mature student), studying English Lit at Uni and she thinks that it's brilliant and plans to pass it on to her daughter when the time comes.

It's lovely to hear that an old book, obviously loved, is still being loved.

After our mum died, my sisters and I found a book in her belongings which was written in Gaelic. It had an inscription in Gaelic inside which apparently states that it was given to her as a prize at school. She was the first member of our Scottish family to speak English as her first language. The older members at that time were still often speaking in Gaelic to each other. I only ever heard her speak a couple of sentences in Gaelic, and that was because I asked her to. She said that she had forgotten most of what she knew as a child.
