It will be interesting to see what effect EUFA's fair play policy has on the EPL, because anyone kidding themselves that all these top foreign players have been coming here for the love of a long-ball dogfight with Blackburn or Birmingham are in for a rude awakening. A decline in the present worldwide interest in the English game, with the resultant revenue drop will have severe repercussions on those clubs who are heavily in debt.

do you really believe this is going to happen? The way I see it Manchester City have no chance of making the grade.

The EPL is suffering from Gordon's "No more boom and bust" delusion. The ever upward spiral in revenue needed to sustain the model that has grown over the past two decades cannot continue forever, and with the effects of the recession beginning to impact on jobs and earnings I can't see how attendances or Sky subscriptions will hold up. Manchester's public service job cuts must have worrying implications for those two clubs, and that will be repeated in many other areas.

There is a lot of pain to come, and a good thing too as we may get back to a more level playing field where the lower orders can do more than just hope to avoid relegation every season.*
