Some of my point Thom. Although the last few years French institutions are kicking our arse in Fields Medals.
My point being I very much doubt any of these guys ever thought they were kicking anyone's arse when they were doing their research.
Just saying I find that patriotic side a bit divorced from the actuality - I've had lunch with Wendelin Werner, I did marking for Simon Donaldson, Tim Gowers even tutored me. A good while ago.
Anyway, enough name dropping.

Of course not. But it's not me that mentioned nationality originally or even institutions. On the other hand I've met quite a few people from the respective french institutions that did seem to be genuinely happy (especially Lyon). As I've said before and it's offended some people a great deal, the point of awards and this is especially talking about the Nobel is to draw attention to ideas. So I'm pretty happy with yesterday and today. And I'm not really bothered either way by the name dropping so long as it's an interesting story.
