I have a bank card for paying for stuff... it's so much more convenient and faff free than a phone. Much smaller too. :okay:

Seems quicker than a lot of people as well

some seem to have their phone ready and just hold it up

but I can do that with my card
some seem to take ages to get it all sorted

and personally I find it far easier to find my card than get my phone out and ready

If it gets stolen they can spend up to £100 per shop until stopped (assuming it has contactless). And there's talk of making it limitless.

"Limitless" is a very slippery word. In practice doesn't mean "without limits" as quickly hit an "abnormal transaction" block. My cards work such that if a transaction is stopped as it's thought unusual, the entire card is also immediately stopped for most transactions until you speak to them or whatever security queries the card requires. (Subscriptions to some things like insurance do continue when blocked in this way).

"Contactless card payments come with the same protection as any other card payment, meaning banks and payment firms must reimburse unauthorised fraud cases, such as when somebody’s card has been lost or stolen."

Most card issuers offer a zero liability but you're still bound to notify the bank within a certain number of days of receipt of a statement of any fraudulent sales. It is very unlikely you wouldn't notice but it isn't a 100% - you can still be liable for the loss if you're negligent in notifying. This also includes or you share your pin or access code with someone which is deemed as an authorised transaction and as such not covered.

I find it slightly less convenient and more faff to use the actual card, since that is in my wallet, aliong with several other cards, so I need to get the wallet out, find the right card, and slide that card out from among the others, while my phone is just take it out, press my finger to the fingerprint detector, and hold the phone to the reader.

But that is very much personal. If you just keep your payment card loose in your pocket, or in one of those flip things that it doesn't need taking out of, then it may well be easier to use your actual card. Or if your phone is more awkward to get at or open.

I set my phone up to do nfc payments, 'cause I'm still a bit geeky and stuff like that interests me, and I have used it BUT in all honesty I prefer to use a card. For me, it's easier as I tend not to carry my phone around with me whereas a card can sit comfortably in my inside jacket pocket. But, yes, each to their own and horses for courses etc.

Not as secure as Google Wallet or Apple pay, though.

Haha, same here!
My fingerprints are always rugged due to various manual activities.
As an EU passport holder, we have had the biometric recognition for our passports for at least 10 years.
Last time I had to renew, they had to take my fingerprint umpteen times before it worked

When I tried to get my 80-something-year-old mum registered for PARAFE at Paris CdG, she said "I don't think I've got any fingerprints left", and sure enough, they couldn't get a single fingerprint from any of her fingers or thumbs. Probably just as well she's not going to be doing any travelling into he EU now, mostly on account her having died in 2020.

Didn't you see the recent coverage on radio and TV? The phone snatchers on E-bikes are emptying people's bank accounts now, as well as selling the phone. I didn't really follow how they were doing it, but it came across as trivially easy.

I would like to know how they do it - and what there is that will stop them??
