A man both made and undone by excessive smoothness. Bacharach, Neil Diamond, and Tony Bennett are hip - Williams never got above knee height. Still and all, he could sing - really sing - but one is left with the impression that he could, perhaps, have reached for more.

Where now for those big Vegas bands? Wayne Newton is fighting off the bailiffs. Only Bennett is still working consistently, but when he gives it up, the art of big drumming may wither on the vine.

My parents brought me up with "proper music" and Andy Williams was definitely proper music. I have a vague memory of seeing him on TV, I was under 10 years old then, and the whole family sat down to watch and listen.
A fantastic singer, I still have a couple of his albums on vinyl hiding in my record collection. I might just dig one out tonight.

Great singer and great understated performer. He was too cool for cool, he didn't need to pigeon holed he was unique. He had long and happy life, it's shame he's gone.
