Hi, after some tips !

Went over on my Ankle before Christmas (not drunk by the way, discarded salad from a sandwich in town centre I slid on and foot went down a low kerb and dug in), initially didnt feel that bad and seemed to be a normal kind of sprain, three days and it got better, took the Dog a walk, resumed the commute and then woke up and couldnt walk on it, different kind of pain, more intense, eventually went to Casualty and they x-rayed it and confirmed it as a sprained ankle, nothing more.

It went away and I layed off the commute for a week and a halft o give it chance, did Monday and all was well, Tuesday fine though I felt a little twinge last night, today, cant walk on it again and am back in the car.

Have changed the cleat position on my shoes to see if that makes and difference, feel really pissed off as was back into the commute, the weather was ok, the nights drawing out and now I dont know when I can do it again without having to put up with this. Commute is only 14 miles round trip as well, was hoping to start takign some longer routes as the nights draw out further.

So, any suggestions ?

I'd try different pedals and dropping the cleats for a while - when I first started using them I found that I had real knee problems (I now know I'd set them up wrongly) but the only way I found to ease the pain having caused the damage was to go back to normal pedals, where I could move my foot about to rest the pressure.

After a couple of months of that I was fine again to go back to cleats.

Unless you have acutally damaged them, often gentle excercise is the best way to recover and build up muscles - but take it easy..

Years ago I sprained an ankle whilst running (well, jogging, was never much of a runner  ), seemed OK at first but a couple of days later I couldn't walk on it. I cycled (one-footed) to the A&E who x-rayed it and said it was "probably a sprain, but we can't be sure as it may be a hairline crack that hasn't opened yet": They put it in half-plaster and told be to return in a week. A week (two actually, I had to go away) and a second x-ray and much consultation later ("It isn't" / "Yes it is - look") they decided it was fractured and put a full plaster on.

Apparently some fractures are difficult to diagnose. If you can't walk on it, get them to look again.
