World Recumbent Bicycle Day is coming on July 7th.
On 7/7/1933 Francis Faure brought recumbent bikes to the world's attention by setting the hour record. He rode a Mochet VeloCar and beat an hour record that had stood for 20 years (previously set by Oscar Egg on 8/18/1914). The new record and the radical design of the bike prompted the UCI to ban recumbent bikes (a ban which is still in place today) and restrict bicycle design for all future competitions.
So go out and celebrate World Recumbent Day. Ride and be proud of the role recumbents play in the world of cycling. Maybe snub your nose at the UCI while you're at it. See less

I still say back in the '30s when bents were banned, bike mfg bought off the UCI so they would not have to buy a bunch of new frame tooling for bents. A total shame since bents are so much more comfortable to ride.

What tooling would the UCI have to sell?

They never made any, as opposed to cycle manufacturers(such as the Wright Brothers) who made their own frames.

I didnt say the UCI was selling tooling. What Im saying is if the UCI approved of bents, MFGs would have to buy new tooling, which is very expensive.

Most would make their own tooling I'd say. Carbon fibre frames aside,

Take a look at your recumbent. There's many parts with a common history of use in standard frames.
