Colleague at work has ruined his issue bike. Hasn't bothered to maintain it over the last 12 months..(by maintain I mean send it to the LBS). It is now going to cost more to repair it than it is worth. Now, because he is 6'4 he is going to need a new bike. So yet again we end up rewarding those who don't deserve it! Personally I would make him walk his beat!

I'm sure your colleague has been negligent in failing to ensure his issued equipment is maintained, he should be told to walk his beat, and a new bike given to an officer who has kept theirs well maintained.

A common theme where people use work supplied gear, whether it's a bike, company car, laptop, etc. Look at the condition of a tradesmans own tools compared to tools shared within a company. Even people that firmly believe in looking after their own things seem to totally absolve themselves of responsibility when they use items belonging to others.

Why haven't you sorry your friend been sent a bill for repairs to make his bike good again?

Cycling back from Wythenshawe once, I saw two cycling police officers, both stopped at the lights near the Tesco Metro in Northenden (makes a change from the Salford ones who generally cycle on pavements, and ignore traffic lights when they are actually on the roads). As the lights changed, they set offf - well tried to set off, because the male officers' pedal and pedal arm fell off!

How does neglecting a bike for 1 year break it?

Interesting point! Them coppers must do some heavy duty policing on their bikes!

In fairness, vikeoab did say 'cost more to repair' rather than 'broke' so maybe they're pretty carpy bikes to begin with.... so a new chain, sprocket, chain rings, cabling, praps a mech or 2.... plus labour... I reckon it could well add up to the cost of a new bike.

Old Claud Butler Rock..
Needs New Forks. BB. Head Set, Chasinset. Rear D. Front wheel buckled with rim dented ( he just rides straight into curbs) Etc.....As above with labour more than the bike is worth.

Problem is that the bikes are not issued to any one officer. They are actually Pool bikes (however most of us lock our bikes up)

A few months backI found mine (forgot to lock it) had beenborrowed by another officer, it was found a few weeks later at another station trashed! Mud guards and rack removed, front wheel buckled and and in 5h1t state. Couldn't prove who had taken it, nothing done about it. Furious.....you bet!
I am tempted to supply my own bike so then it doesn't get used by anyone else.

I used to manage the cycle shop which serviced the Sustrans office pool Brompton. They used to hammer that poor thing into the ground. The staff member who drew the short straw to drag the sorry wreck to the bike shop was always really embarrassed by its appalling condition. The real surprise was that so many Sustrans staff treated their personal bikes in exactly the same way.

Sounds like some policemen on bikes shouldn't be doing the job at all if they have such little idea of what they are doing.... no change there then?
Vike, if the vandal who managed to inflict all that damage to your bike in a few weeks why wasn't there a criminal inquiry and the culprit found.... you have detectives in the force still presumably?

One of my colleague's partners had similar issues - he is a keen cyclist, and used to find this frustrating as he would spend ages each day making a pool machine ridable (to his safety standard). He now takes his home after presenting a case that it would improve his efficiency and reduce costs if he was to keep and maintain his own machine.

They wouldn't cover costs or parts though - this type of thing is still done centrally.
