In summer I just use the quilt cover.

I wash the linen once a week, but duvets not at all when I was using them. Nowadays I use blankets, and wash them once a year when there's a fine summer day to dry them.

I don't wash my duvets, just replace them every 6 months or so ... when I remember
I buy duvets from Home Bargains or similar at around a tenner each.
On a nice, sunny summer day, I will air my duvet on the washing line for around an hour.
I never go to bed without having had a shower first, the duvet doesn't really get dirty unless the cats have an accident, but then my bed is always covered by a "cat protector throw" ^_^
I would take an expensive duvet to get professionally cleaned.

I've got a vintage duck down jobbie. I just air it outside over the summer. It's had a few replacement covers over the years - once the feathers start poking through (and that's rather prickly!) then I sew a new cover over the old one.

Duvet covers get laundered on the usual regular basis.

Currently rocking a Star Trek TNG one :becool:
