Another failed overtake

I had a c*** in a dumper truck fail to overtake me the other morning. Not that that stopped him. Approaching red light in good secondary leading onto a roundabout, hear the engine revving, he moves out into the second lane but then starts to move back into the inside lane again before he's passed me. I smacked the side of his truck with my palm three times (that's how close he was) then I braked as he kept coming. Then he got very aggressive, swinging RIGHT and then back left, ending up stopped diagonally, blocking both lanes. As the light was still red I hopped on the verge, got in front of him and gave him a questioning shrug as to why he nearly killed me. I couldn't hear his response through the closed window, but it seemed to consists of the same two words repeated over and over, punctuated occasionally by a word beginning with 'W'. Sadly in the heat of the moment I neglected to take his reg and contact his employers. Next time I will. Since then I've taken primary leading to this junctiong, though I doubt it would have done much to prevent such a t*** attempting this again. Rant over.

The last failed overtake I've had was on Monday when a bus decided he wanted to overtake me doing 22 in a 20mph zone too pull into a bus stop  luckilly he realised my speed on his 3rd attempt and pulled back out. He had definitely saw me because 2seconds earlier when I was overtaking another cyclist he started giving the 'get out of my way' beep. I've normally got lots of respect for buses, especially this company which has been very courteous to me in the past and in turn I'm very courteous back but I suppose you always get one bad apple. Before that it has been quite some time since the last failed overtake and it usually occurs at traffic islands.

Am feeling for you Eddiemee, I cycle past a gravel pit on my commute and consequently, theres loads of dumper trucks going up and down the London Road here, they are all ****s at driving! Generalisitic, maybe, but Ive never seen one in all my years driven with care. There's loads of HGV drivers, and they are a god send and very aware of me. Those dumpers fly straight past me at speed in very close range, I swear speeding too and act like kings of the road, I really hate them! Now, this clip on you tube I saw ages ago, is not me and I dont know if the owner is on here, so I hope he dont mind me posting it, but he cycles a section of the same route I do and has caught one of the many daily close passes on camera, good work! :-

PS, Speed limit at that section is 30!

I had Mondeo Man try it on the approach to a roundabout today. He did kind of get away with it.

There'd been a car behind me, who'd waited patiently (I was doing around 20mph in a 30 limit) as we went through a couple of pinch points, so I moved from primary to secondary to let her pass as she had plenty of time before the roundabout .. she did a nice wide clean overtake and it was all good.

But I'd failed to account for AplahMaleRepBloke behind her who it seemed was trying to pass her as she overtook me .. and failed, probably 'cos she gave me plenty of room not leaving him room to pass her. Leaving him behind her, wide and sort of alongside me.

Course, there was no way I was going to get back into primary (where I'd normally be on the approach to this particular not very big rounabout) with him now performing so I settled for holding a strong secondary on the way into the roundabout - I had escape routes if need be. In dubious fairness to him, he did stay way out on the way into the roundabout and give me some space, though he did then really clip the left kerb on the exit (it's a simple small "cross-roads" style roundabout and we were all going straight over) but by then I'd slowed down and let him go 'cos all my escape routes were on the approach, not on the exit.

Ironically, she was taking a left turn about 50 yards beyond the roundabout so he had to slow behind her - he couldn't do that big aggressive swing out swing back manouveur so beloved of his type 'cos of a tocking great truck coming the other way. So I then ended up right behind him, tucked down low over the bars glaring at him in his rear view mirror.

Cue big puff of diesel fumes as soon as the way was clear and off he went.

Even other HGV drivers haven't got much time for tipper drivers.

Is that true Rhythm Thief? I can quite well belief it!

Do these "tippers/dumpers" come under the same regulation as HGV's? It seem's quite not if soo!

They do, but often tipper drivers are paid by the load, so they're more prone to cutting corners to get the job done quickly. There are tipper drivers out there, incidentally, who are a credit to their profession. But I had one of them try and run me off the road on a narrow A road in the Welsh Valleys a while ago, when I was slogging uphill in a loaded artic and he was coming down, so I'm not a fan.

Quite mad then!

Yes, theres always going to be the exceptions, and I bet they really cant stand the rest given them a bad name too!

That, I just dont get! What an idiot! You dont need a D-lock to whack these lorries with, you need a cycle friendly bazooka!

See, as big as they are, I feel safe around HGV's. I guess am very used to them. I always make sure they can see me and my intentions and the same are recriprecated well.

So it seems, its not necessary a tipper drivers sole fault for driving like a d*ck then, and more to do with the way contacts are set up etc? Still, thats no excuse in my mind!

However, I still reckon it will be a toyota prius that will kill me on the road than anthing else, I cant hear them!

eddiemee, I've had to hit a bus a few times when it overtook badly before a roundabout.

I've also had bad tipper lorry/hgv overtakes which are scarey too....also had really patient ones too. Especially on the way to my old job, going up New Lands Corner, always very slow and steep. Many times the lorrys would stick patiently behind if there wasn't room to overtake.

Wasn't a blue and white tipper (blue chassis and blue tipper section - white cab)- not an eight wheeler by any chance with a hiab?.....

Yes, I felt a bit sick watching it.

Thanks for the responses everyone, it seems this sort of incident is sadly all too common. FWIW, my experience with other HGVs, particularly articulated lorries, has been that they are GENERALLY quite considerate drivers. Dumper trucks it would seem are a law unto themselves.

Be safe..
