The court acccepted that he was not to blame for the collision, so why should he be punished for it?

Because he failed to stop at the scene of an accident?

And so he has been given three months in prison, suspended for 12 months, and banned from driving for 12 months. He was also given 200 hours of unpaid community work and ordered to pay £95 court costs.

The accident itself wasn't his fault, so he hasn't been punished for that, just for legging it.

Wasn’t the cyclists fault? Depends if the investigating officer was taking the “Cambridgeshire Police Approach” to the accident – it could have been that the poor 12 year old was on the road rather then in a crappy lane… ergo fair game for any driver.

There is very little to go on in that piece however. I’m not in any way condoning people driving off after an accident, but I do believe that some people may act out of character when in shock for example. The motorist could have panicked and fled the scene only to turn himself in later. I’m not sticking up for it, but in the heat of the moment people can act in very stupid ways.
