FFS, if he didn't notice a bridge, would he have noticed a pedestrian/cyclist who happened to be in the way?

I've heard of people driving roof-mounted bikes into car park height barriers, but in that case the bikes on the roof are not the norm. This chap must drive the lorry day in, day out, and should know how high it is, and also be aware enough to notice a sodding great bridge with black and yellow stripes in front of him!

Last year the driver of a car transporter decided to head down here.....

I was one of the many eejits waving at him to stop. It took about 4 hours and a specialist tow truck to get him out.

Just in case you're wondering, that's a right-angled turn ahead, leading to a gated cul-de-sac.

The only thing I can add is that common sense isn't allowed in some companies. Their drivers are given strict instructions to follow their SatNav only. That means no road/street maps allowed either.

I used to work in a shop about 50 yards away from a low railway bridge we got quite adept at knowing what lorries would and wouldn't go under it... so we used to stand by the door and watch them try.... sometimes they would realise, sometimes they wouldn't.......

The Railway bridge strike was on a speed dial button on the phone... we rang it at least once a week

don't they produce satnav software for HGVs? That would guide them well away from unsuitable bridges and the like?
Apparently the SatNav confused the driver when it stated they should to turn left at the roundabout, the left just before the bridge. The left is a slip road off the main road which goes onto a small roundabout.
Still no excuse for ignoring the flashing warning signs and the bridge itself.
