don't they produce satnav software for HGVs? That would guide them well away from unsuitable bridges and the like?

Or the drivers could just pay attention to the road signs... like "Low Bridge" "not suitable for HGVs" "use alternative route to avoid low bridge" or maybe just read the stated height of the bridge, and compare that to the height of their vehicle before trying to drive under it.

True but if the satnav was clever enough to route them so they never got to that point it would save a lot of trouble.

Recently I stopped off for the night south of Orleans and got talking to a Brit with a huge camper van. He told me he'd just snarled up the entire cities traffic system because he encountered an unexpected low bridge. Unfortunately he could not easily reverse the monster and all sorts of people had to get involved to sort out the mess. He was obviously extremely wealthy and took such minor problems in his stride.

In this case the satnav had told the driver to take the left before the bridge but for some reason he was confused and drove straight on, into the bridge.

That's the same common sense that won't fit hands free in their vehicles, but still call the drivers while they know they are on the road.

I encountered a car at the top of this local path. You might think that the narrowing of the path to singletrack, the cobbled surface, the 30% gradient, a 'no entry' sign, a footpath sign, and an 'unsuitable for motors' sign would be strong enough hints that this was not a good idea, but mister satnav, he say 'go', so mister driver, he say 'duuuuuuuuh, ok'!

He managed to pick his way to within about 50 metres of the top, but then got stuck, eventually gave up and reversed all the way down again!

This idiocy is so common round here that people have started painting their own signs to warn drivers ...

... but drivers still carry on trying to drive along these paths!

Round these parts, the road signs are clever enough to say Take this route to Bentham (for example), "avoiding low bridge" or this more direct route, on which there is a low bridge in a mile...

...maybe it's a male thing, the inability to multitask between satnav and road signs.

Satnavs have kind of spoiled my morning dog walks, in that one of the roads I used to enjoy walking along has become a morning rat-run for peeps wanting to avoid the town centre (probably saving themselves about 3 minutes driving time, and spoiling a once quiet country road, the sill twonklets.

I've heard of drivers doing this, but never seen it
Thought it was barriered/iron-bollarded off, at the top?)

That said, in the wet, I'd possibly hesitate to have taken any of my Land Rovers up there
