Another perfectly good pair of underpants ruined!

Was driving home yesterday with wife and kids in the car. Cruising at about 60 mph on the dual carriageway when at the very last second I see something hurtling towards the windscreen aiming for my head...then a massive bang as it impacts on the screen. I thought the screen would be smashed for certain! Slammed on and checked mirrors etc and saw a bird picking itself of the road and flapping (albeit groggily) off. Checked the screen but can't see any damage. I've never hit a bird before (or any other animals that I know of...other than flies etc). What a shock!

Have you ever hit something in the car or on a bike?

I know one cc'er who did recently @Mo1959 Luckily she's on her way back to recovery (and more QOMs!)

I've done the same with a pheasant that decided to double back after flying across the road ahead of me. Took off the passenger side wiper and scared the life out of me. I never found the bird so don't know how it fared - probably not well.

I've mentioned it before but on the bike I had a squirrel try to run through through my front wheel. Fortunately it ended up headbutting a spoke rather than getting between them otherwise it could have been rather messy.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
I hit a pheasant 4 years ago. I was going about 60mph at the time and it came right across the front of my car a 4x4 at the time. It was flying low and hit my bumper and bounced up into the air and over a wall never to be seen again. It broke my bumper on the passenger side. there was a bloody great hole in it.

and just a couple of days ago, I was driving into town, when a bird about the size of a pigeon hit the roof of my car at the front drivers side. It made an awful bang and I could see it lying in the road dead. I stopped and checked my roof, but there was no damage thank god.

its quite a shock when it happens and the noise is almost deafening, makes you jump.

I had a dog run out on me years ago that I simply couldn't avoid despite standing on the anchors. Thankfully the dog was OK, I took it to a vets anyway as it wasn't with anyone but I'm sure it would have been OK barring the scratch on it's nose.

I cringe on seeing any animal in the road after seeing my own dog knocked down when I was about 8  She survived that after emergency surgery but succumbed to a brain tumour just a few years later, which I'm convinced to this day stemmed from the head injury she sustained when she got knocked down.

Really?

I've twice had birds fly/run in front of me.

Years ago driving along an A road near Attleborough a game bird was running along the pavement away from me but for some reason as I reached it it decided to do a sharp right into the road straight in front of me. I didn't stop to look but saw a cloud of feathers in my mirror.

Second time was on the A686 near the top of Hartside. I was happily driving along when another kind of game bird shot straight out from the side of the road and hit the nearside bumper, I've no idea what happened to it, and more importantly there was no damage to the car.

Its horrible when it happens to a beloved pet. At least with the animals I hit you can think it's inevitable that your going to hit at least one bird in your driving career especially if you live in the country.

When i got to work one day a few years ago, i got out and found a small bird stuck to the front grill on my car. Dead obviously. i didnt even know i had hit it. It was only small a sparrow i think.

i gave you a like for taking it to the vet by the way. Just in case someone says anything. Some people would not have done that. They would have just left it.

Mate drove into a tree to avoid a deer. Waited over an hour for a recovery vehicle, only one person came past in that time and they were only interested in the health of the deer. Albeit for eating.
On the ride to one pub, I have to be careful of badgers as they have actually run straight at me. In the summer around say 8pm I can go round a corner on rural back road and find a Stag and his Harem feeding on the grass verge. Disconcerting for all. A good way of checking your emergency braking skills.

Just remembered mates wife (different mate I have a few!) hit a badger, did a lot of damage to bumper and apparently no damage to the badger. A duck decided to take off and fly over my head as I was cycling past it, its feet skimmed my helmet. Stupid Duck!

Fifteen years or so ago I was heading towards Wetherby on the A58. I was approaching a car from the rear with the intention of overtaking it when I saw a pheasant run in front of the car, re-appear over the top of the car and hit me in the chest as I was overtaking. It didn't half hurt but I continued on before looking down and seeing the lifeless pheasant on my lap.

I pulled in and put it into one of my panniers and continued on up to Darlington where I swapped it for a couple of pints of beer. I didn't get away unscathed, I had a bruise with a pattern matching the stitches in my coarse knit Peruvian sweater that I used as a thermal layer under my Belstaff jacket.
