I've noticed at work that people are cycling more (the bike shed is more full now than ever, and even had a healthy few bikes during the winter). Even those who haven't taken to cycling, some of them are buying much more modest cars (if we ignore the fool who after a few shandies too many found he had bought a 9mpg winnebago).
They are very popular out here in China and are even used as short distance taxis taking kids to school as well as adults on short(ish) runs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

China is quite inspiring in some ways, to see all of those workers riding to work. I know they have another level of BSO over there, though, given the poverty. I know of no other place where you can buy a (working) bike for £5
I'm sure I read a report the other day that there are X% fewer cars on the roads than two years ago due to the fuel increase, so maybe the ones who could cycle have finally been given the impetus to actually do it.
