Get some ego grips, the round ones are horrid. Specialized are good or get the more expensive ergon ones with bar. Ends for more hand positions

Thanks for the suggestion. Silly question but are they all universal?

Almost all, but check that they're for your handlebar diameter, which is probably 22.2mm

About the scraping brakes: you may have picked up grit on the pads which has gouged out metal from the rim which is now scratching along. Some pad makes are worse than others for that.

Thanks. I've had a look through the spec list and it doesn't say anywhere. Will have to measure them.

They were scraping slightly before I'd even used the bike. The woman in halfords (who I didn't have the most faith in), said "they can be like that to start with". Will see how they are after a few more miles.

Sounds like half odds couldn't be bothered to clean the pads.

Oh dear. If it carries on I'll take it back in. The woman that built it wasn't happy with me to start with. She wouldn't let me use British cycling membership in conjunction with 10% flash sale price. Phoned customer services and they authorised it with the store, the manager told her to accept it.

My OH joked saying "Your bike will probably fall apart now she's built it".

You could just clean the pads.

I'd check it over but that's just me (In God We Trust: All Others Bring Data). Worst case, shops are held responsible for their builds (unless you tell them not to bother, which is a bit silly even if they're no good).

Thank you for the video mjray. I've got hydraulic disks on it though. To be honest they already sound better when I spin the wheels.

She's 'borrowed' her brothers specialised road bike that's been in his garage for 2 years, it's a specialized allez elite road bike and it's really nice. Going to go for a ride with her tomorrow. Prepared to get left behind because she's a spinning teacher
