Another satisfied MS Essentials user here. On Windows 7. The wife's business laptop will be following when AVG (paid version) runs out.

The best bit of MS software I've used to date. Does the business on very few resources, doesn't interfere with anything else (apart from when installing some software) and a doddle to set up - it just gets on with it.

Don't bother on the mac with any thing but on the pcs use eset,put in by my computer chum for free! Very good bit of kit,no slowing up and let's nothing in!he recommends it to all his customers ,but is not the cheapest

It's free and does the lot.

Avast! (no, it's not yet International Speak Like A Pirate Day.... aargh!). Avast! is free, but if you really like it, then you can buy the paid version, and it's reasonably priced. Avast! is the only AV software I've ever used which didn't act like malware itself by completely ruining my PC's performance (hope you're reading this, Symantec...).

I installed Avast for the first time when I got a new computer last autumn, and I won't be going back to the likes of Norton and McAfee. Inexpensive (I went for the paid version), quick to install and, as victor said, doesn't slow down your computer. I still have McAfee installed on my old laptop, but I'll be replacing it with Avast when the subscription runs out. I've noticed eAvast detects threats that McAfee doesn't (and they're both kept up to date).

I've been using AVG Free for the last couple of years - I think it's been pretty good.

Been using AVG for years, it was pretty good, but something managed to get by it a year or so ago and it was getting too needy, too many pop ups, too intrusive.
Switched to MSE, which was very light on resources, but my mate who is a techno boffin and repairs computers for a living says he gets loads of repairs in with viruses that have side stepped MSE like it wasn't there.

Kaspersky has a very good reputation - but there is no such thing as a free lunch, the more heavy duty your protection the more resource it's going to use.

So, for the first time in years I have paid for Anti Virus and I'm using Norton. It used to have a bad rep for resource hogging but they have got that sorted now. It seems to have struck the balance between effective protection but without being too obtrusive. It's pretty much fit and forget and works for me.

Norton and Mcafee are the best imo. But i hate paying, so on my personal computers i use AVG free.

+1 again for avast but the problem is not with whatever anti virus you use it's how fast it's updated. X makes a virus someone "catches" it and an "antidote" is found, you just have to hope you arn't the one who "catches" it first and the cure gets sent out to you before the thing reaches you. It's just a race between the sad dross who make these things and the rest of us who try to avoid them
