Another vote for Windows Defender. Plus all the other security features which should be turned on by default. When you get the laptop; go into Windows Security centre to make sure they are. Make sure Windows update is set to automatically apply security updates as well. I think they are still weekly on a Tue.

Simple thing but make sure the accounts have passwords set. Add an account to the laptop with her name. Make sure it is not an admin account. She should log in with that for her everyday use. Admin account should have a different password, and used rarely.

As above, save her work to a cloud service. The free office is likely Microsoft 365 and thus will be cloud anyway. But double check before she heads back to uni.

One review said AVG was the best free antivirus but whilst I've had no viruses (that I know off) in the last couple of years its also the most annoying with pop ups.

Groupon (and similar places) sell AV software cheaply. Personally I've been using MS Defender for about 5 years with no issues (can't the same for when I used McAfee for a couple of years).

Group also sell Windows Pro, Office Pro (desktop versions, not web apps) and Project - all very cheaply as activation keys only. You get the software itself from Microsoft's site.
