In my experience drawing with a pen encouraged fine clean detail and if this is what she is aiming for get her some nice paper and a pack of something like a
Stabilo Point 88 Pen Set. At the other extreme is charcoal and with a pad of newsprint she can do broad strokes instead.
If you go for something in between with a large sketch pad and soft pencils make sure and buy a decent eraser too as this will help with 3D rendering.

my design teacher warned us against the rotring isographs as, according to her, they tend to block up... better performance can be achieved via a much less expensive fine nibbed pen type thing.
I spent five years at college trying to unblock clogged up Rotring pens. Utter misery...the pens that is. I converted to Pentel Ceranomatics (alas, no longer available) which had a ceramic tip, not a steel one, and absolutely wonderful free flowing ink. They were a joy to write and draw with. If you can find a pen with a ceramic tip, give it a try.

I love that stuff @Aperitif tif, there's an exhibition on in Birmingham of photorealism http://www.bmag.org.uk/events?id=2740. That's an Estes I do believe.
Reminds me of an early expedition, to the BP Portrait Artist of the Year exhibition. She would have been something like eight or nine at the time, and I showed her one of the pictures which was a stunning thing in acrylics. She seemed, to my amazement, not only unimpressed but almost a tad contemptuous. 'But, don't you think it's amazing,' I spluttered, 'I mean, it could almost be a photograph.' She gave me one of her 'looks': 'If you want a photograph, why not use a camera?'

Thanks all. Off to google ceramic tips & Stabilo Point 88 Pen Sets...

Shameless plug here for Carl Randall - sublime imagery of Japan in this year's show.
