As someone who has little interest in cars apart from owning one to get about - could you answer a question for me?

Yesterday, for most of the day, there was a car rally taking place in the countryside around here, organised by the local town's rally club. The roads were not closed and the cars seemed to be within the speed limits (we have a 30kp/h limit in the hamlet).

So, what"s the point?

Travelling between 'special (closed road) stages' which is where the racing happens.

There are two types of competitive rallies. One is a rally race, this is the type of rallying you see on TV. The other is a navigation rally. The idea is to get to various check points within certain time frames. The times are set in such a way that if you drive at the speed limit on the shortest route you'd actually arrive early. You gain points for arriving early or late, the driver with the least points wins, for this reason you'll often find a few cars in lay-bys or car parks a few km from the check point. These are people who would arrive at the check point early but are having a little rest.

There are also informal rallies which are typically arranged by classic car clubs were you start at one point & finish at another. It's a social drive a bit like a cycle club run & normally the end point is a car show.

The Moffat classic car rally is an annual event, and an example of the above type of rally. I usually go to it, weather dependent, along with some motorbike buddies. We join the rally for their drive to St. Mary's Loch and the Devil's Beef Tub. (Video is not mine!).
