A military Osprey flew over here yesterday. It was flying quite high and in conventional mode sounding just like a normal prop driven aeroplane . The Grisly flew over the day before on a similar route .

Landing in Glasgow in a strong westerly gale is never fun. This KLM plane from Amsterdam is struggling this morning, going around for a 3rd attempt.

That groundspeed of 121 knots would suggest a westerly wind component of around 40 kts (plus any gusts).

In the past, that would have meant lots of Edinburgh diversions to Glasgow.

I'm nearly throwing up just watching these planes fighting the storm winds to land at Heathrow.

At least 5 abandoned attempts to land followed by diversion.

The Edinburgh to Heathrow flight has gone back to Edinburgh, ditto Lufthansa from Munich back to there, TAP Portugal has gone to Paris, the Chicago arrival to Geneva ...

Yeah you'll always have some holding plus enough for a diversion. Cautious Captains will ask for extra on a day like this, as they say "better in the aircraft than in the bowser".
Not all companies like (or even allow) their crew to do discretionary fuel uplift because it costs money to carry it. Choose your airline wisely! (You can probably guess the ones who frown on the practice).
