If I feel someone is considering an unsafe pass, I put my palm out in a 'stay there' gesture, which becomes a 'thumbs-up' once the hazard has passed. Never had any objection from a driver.
Yes, that's a combination I've used before, and like you have never had a poor reaction to it (in fact have had hazards flashed as a 'thank you' when I've seen an oncoming vehicle before them).

Poor driving. You didn't do anything wrong, but take the advice written above. If I feel someone is considering an unsafe pass, I put my palm out in a 'stay there' gesture, which becomes a 'thumbs-up' once the hazard has passed. Never had any objection from a driver.
Communication plain and simple, something that most cyclists and motorists seem to lack but, thats life and internet forums for you !

Well today I did put everyone's opinions into action (moving out earlier I mean).

I was approaching a pinch point and there was a car coming up behind me. I indicated and moved out about 100 meters before the point. After the point, I moved back into secondary and there was a still a car behind me. It was now about 0.3 of a mile to the next pinch point.
The car whom had waited behind me, did not overtake when it was safe to do so. I reached the next pinch point (a double one just before traffic lights), and indicated and moved out again.
I stopped at the lights and after them, the driver then decided to overtake me safely.
I looked over to her and was going to smile and thank her but she was looking ahead so I just carried on.

I do my best to thank people, but sometimes I am concentrating too hard on what is happening around me for me to do so. I am always glad to see someone driving sensibly but when they dont overtake when I expect them to, I get a little bit agetated that they are still behind me.

It always makes me feel a bit under pressure! But it's important to remember that an over-cautious overtaker is better than the opposite.

I'm not sure (while I'm typing) where the negativity about owners of one marque or another comes from.
There is a degree to which some contributors to this forum rail against the stereotyping of 'typical bloody cyclists' but are happy to berate Audi drivers, BMW drivers, lorry drivers and the like as a group.
I do agree that we should try to avoid sterotyping, but you are to some extent confusing two different things. The problem I see with stereotyping of cyclists is that some people say things like "all cyclists jump red lights, always". That would be analogous to saying that "all Audi drivers overtake too close always", which is not the same as observing that a high proportion of the bad overtakes involve people driving Audis (which is certainly my experience - white Audis in particular).

Don't fall into the logical fallacy of affirming the consequent: "A implies B, B is true, therefore A is true". That just does not follow.

This point is not made enough. It makes a huge difference. +1

I also agree that it is always a good idea to thank good driving but it's worth reading the following scary tale if your skill levels are about as good as mine:
