Hey
Just wondered if someone could answer me a medical question in simple terms for me, perhaps a doctor or someone who has had experience with this matter.....

My niece who is 3 has suspected autism but also seems to have an issue with her muscles.
She can walk for only a little amount of time before becoming increasingly tired and saying her legs hurt and it takes here a fair while to recover. She has been undergoing blood tests for the last few months and recently been told that her lactic acid level is 5, when as it should be 1.......so I'm led to believe...?
I have read that a build up of lactic acid has regularly been accused of causing muscle soreness and pain, when most commonly it's actually the muscle cells that are damaged.
Obviously I'm no doc but I would be most grateful if anyone could shed some light on the subject and give us some clue as to why her lactic levels are so high.....
Like I mention she is on the autism spectrum ... .could it be linked ?
Thanks in advance

Edited due to stupid phone self spelling different words for me

You're asking a community which might have some doctors some of whom might be specialists in the narrow of knowledge that could give you the answers that you seek would having access to her full medical records.

It's a big ask.

Yes I know. To be honest, just some form of knowledge on the subject at all would be a great help for me. We are very very close to a diagnosis but it seems that we've been this close for far too long. Any sort of insight to this subject would be handy

I am not a doctor, far from it, however I'm struggling to see how you can have a link between a mental condition (Autism) and a physical condition (the lactic acid build up).

Personally I would not worry about it, you mentioned she is having blood tests so I would just wait till the doctor gives you the full details. He or she would be the best person to ask in this situation!

My wife works as TA, extensively with autistic children. Just asked her opinion..non medical of course, but based on observation in classes. Tiredness seems be associated with autism, but..they believe some of the tiredness is learned or behavioural with some children.
Many autistic children tend to be 'difficult' and despite their reluctance to be close to other people, they're not averse to the attention bad behaviour gets them. Some of the kids will throw themselves on the floor in a tantrum and complain they're tired or similar...and the staff know they're not, they're seeking the attention. They know exactly what they're doing. This behaviour manifests itself in many different ways, some will deliberately do something they know they're not allowed to...to get that reaction.
I said it's ironic, they shun personal contact, yet seem to get a buzz from it. The wife nodded in agreement immediately.

The above of course may not and is not intended to suggest your niece is doing this...but it is common with autistic children.

Totally agree @gbb
It is a difficult one to judge at such a young age.
Many thanks
