any fridge freezer techies on here?

the freezer section of our fridge/freezer is now running far too warm (cold, but not enough to keep anything frozen).

is it likely to be fixable? not being at all rich at the mo i could do without having to buy another…

If it's old it will be that the compresor is worn out or it needs re-gassing. Is is very noisy? The former you could probably replace, if you could get the part and the latter is probably not worth the cost and certainly not worth doing if the compressor is worn out and in any case if you replaced the compressor you'd need to re-gas it, so I guess you're buggered all ways, aren't you?

Time for a new one?

There should be some reasonable ones secondhand around when people install new kitchens.

Old models used to only have a thermostat in the fridge and then assume that the compressor would be on long enough to keep the freezer frozen... Problem with the assumption is what happens if you keep it in a cold garage or utility room; the compressor never comes on and the freezer defrosts...

So if its an old model somewhere cold then it could be that.

it's about five and a bit years old and lives in an unheated kitchen in a centrally heated house (about 4 foot from a radiator through a usually open door).

Following on from above -

If the fridge bit works then as the freezer is working off the same gubbins that is making both cold then there may not be too much wrong with it.

Try adjusting the fridge up to very cold or leave the fridge door open for an hour. Both should trigger the thing to work flat out and so should freeze the freezer part. That should enable you to assess if it is able to be saved or not.

This is assuming you do not have a seperate setting knob for the freezer.
