Despite being 10 years old and out of print, IMHO Richard Ballantine's 21st Century Bicycle Book remains the one that distills and describes the most extensive knowledge and wisdom related to bikes and cycling. It is like reading answers to many of the questions raised in CC, but in a book!

You can pick one up secondhand for only about £10 from Amazon at present.
