I quite fancy a 3-4 day cycle tour over the Xmas/New Year period, B&B or cheap hostels as I'm too much of a wimp for the tent.

I am based in East Sussex so I have easy access to Newhaven-Dieppe or Portsmouth-Caen/Le Havre, although I have done quite a few routes from both of these destinations in France. I'm not ruling anything out, though.I have also cycled around the Isle of Wight from Portsmouth-Rye.

It would also be nice to cycle in England so I am looking for inspiration.

My only restrictions are no car, so I am reliant on trains to get too destinations.

Any thoughts gratefully received and thanks in advance.

For me one of the freedoms of touring is the ability to get lost, explore new areas and have no plan whatsoever apart from a destination at the end of the tour

I usually dyop mid afternoon and phone the Tourist Information or use the Internet to find somewhere to stay

However Saturday's are weddings, and Sunday's are a day off for some establishments so these are the only days that I pre book

This may also be the limiting factor for the tour as accommodation may be limited

Then you also have the plan by Network Rail to prevent as many services as possible over this busy period as we are not as important as commuters

In the UK, you should stick to the drier east for lowest risk of a rained off tour. E Anglia can get cold and icy if there are N-Easterlies. Seal watching on E Norfolk coast is a popular xmas activity.
Channel isles is another destination with mild climate.

You really need to check for the rail works over the Christmas period. a trip I was planing to use the trains to get to the start, has replacement bus;s for a good stretch this is for Southern and South west trains parts of southern into London are bus's as well.
