Beg to differ, if the wire to the starter is hr or dis then pressing button will do nothing, also if it has sidestand/neutral immobisilation then again the lights will not dim

Put it away, I don't care how far up the wall you can reach...
My guess is the battery is properly dead. New one probably called for.
... because b'n'y said he thought the battery was 'properly dead'. The lights work, so it isn't.

You could have just said "I was wrong" or "Sorry" or something but you seem to consider belittling others makes you look better.

You are wrong with that too.

Norm, I am truly sorry but I still don't know the issues you are currently suffering from, you clearly have a bee in your bonnet about something & have decided to take it out on me.

I didn't say you were wrong, because actually you might not be, I'm not quite sure how saying that I beg to differ is in anyway belittling you, unless you know another meaning that I am not aware of.

My point was that if the starter is stuck but current is getting to it, if the button is pressed, then yes you would expect the lights to dim as the current had a easier path to earth. But if a relay wasn't coming in, there is a safety bypass circuit not made, then pressing the button to an open circuit will not make a circuit therefore the lights will not dim. Again if this is belittling you then you have my apologies, it is not my intention, all I am trying to do is assist the OP.
