Can I bend your ear?

My hot water tank makes a horrendous noise when the shower is running...it's like a high pitched ongoing tone...

...the stange thing is that when I then run the cold tap anywhere in the place it stops.

Any clue what this might be?

TIA

you mean turning the mains tap so that it isn't fully open?
Yes! Turn it closed slowly until the noise stops.
The reduced pressure is unlikely to give any noticeable change in water flow from taps or in shower performance..
Try it and see, at least this will eliminate one possible cause of the noise.

(The domestic flow in my house is fine with the mains tap only turned open one half turn, to open it fully takes two full turns.)

Possible it's the ball valve in the cold water tank which feeds the cylinder. Run the shower, hold up the ball valve and see if that stops it.

Two guesses,
1. vibrating pipe. When it is making noise go round and touch the pipe wherever you can and see if on is vibrating. If so bung something behind it.
2. Build up of scale. Smaller pipe then needs faster flow of water that may be then setting it off. Depends on if you are in a hard water area or not.

..cheers chaps...

I'm definately in a hard water area...south downs chalk etc
Im struggling to release the stopcock..it's proper stuck...I don't think it's a vibrating pipe...tried that..
I think it's more of a pressure build up...and the cold water tap release eases the pressure so the noise goes...

...right off to find a wench wrench.
