Quick question on PET scanners.
When you are talking about a PET scan, do you say 'pet scan' or 'P. E. T. scan' (in the same way that you might say 'C. T. scan') ??

Any acronym that can, will become a word in the English language: Vascar. Radar. Umist. Snafu. Awol. Sonar.

If it can't, it remains an initialism: OMG, BBC, IBM, NCR.

PET as in "fluffy fury animal around the house" scan......... well that's what we call them here in Cumbria. However, often combined with a CT for extra info so becomes a PET-CT scan.

It sort of stopped when scanners became more sophisticated. The originals from way back when could only format images in the axial plane (the A in CAT scan), now they can do much more so the "A" got dropped........... 15 years ago?

Something to do with the RSPCA, I think.
People turning up at their local vets for them instead of going to radiology at the hospital!

I'm not but come into irregular contact with them (on a purely professional basis, you understand...) and all call them PET (cocker spaniel, fluffy bunny, etc) scan rather than P.E.T. scan. in my experience.
