A joiner friend of mine made his own for smoking the mackerel he caught. It's not difficult.

I've just looked further myself and the digital ones are getting rubbish reviews, the one my nephew has is a little older, perhaps the new model has problems.
I've been using the gas barbecue to do long and slow smoking, but it's a right faff to keep the smoke levels and temperature right over a long period, so I'm in the market for a proper smoker. I know @pplpilot did his Christmas dinner in one, so some of you at least must know about this stuff! So any suggestions?
I have a Weber Smokey mountain 47cm. Can't fault it really. Do A LOT of reading up and be prepared to be disappointed early on. But once you get the hang of it it's fantastic.
By the way, do you find the thermometer on the Smokey Mountain reliable?
I've hot had issues. To be honest after a half dozen smokes you tend to get a feel for what's right and tend to follow your gut feeling. I find a thermometer for the internal of the meat far more of a need
We looked at the Big Green Egg, but all the accessories at high prices were a bit off-putting. I can get my head around paying a thousand quid for one, but having to fork out another 25% for a stand to put it on is taking the mickey.
There are other BigGreenEgg look-alikes that are a lot cheaper. The BGE is the Rolls Royce with a price tag to match!

We decided against as we (ie I) have a Weber original kettle, a Smokey Mountain and an European Outdoor Chef gas kettle so splurging on a BGE or similar would be a bit OTT.
Just bought a Smokey Mountain 47cm. Not a bad price, 350 quid for the smoker plus a cover, certainly a lot cheaper than Amazon.

We took a serious look at the Big Green Egg, but the accessories were just ridiculously priced - beyond bling, and I don't have access to my brother's arc welding stuff over here, so couldn't have made my own "nest" for 5% of the price.
Nice. Smokers are smokers get left out in all weather, never cleaned etc etc (well mine at least) Big green is nice and all that but a bit unnecessary.
