Any tips on stopping my bike from rusting?

I had the same issue so i lube and clean my chain after each ride. I also cover my bike when in the garage to help it against the elements a little more.

Its a bit of a pain but it sorts it !

When you say the 'back chain rings', do you mean the cassette?

Either way, sanding anything isn't going to good much good as you will only remove any plating the parts may have to start with?

Sonds like a light application of lube all-round would be of benefit. Put some on an old rag and wipe affected areas to leave a thin film.

If you use it every 1-2 days in the winter it normally cuts down on the rusting a lot. But if you're worried about rust you can re-oil after it's been drenched in heavy rain or like now when there's a lot of grit about.

You can clean the surface rust off fairly easily with some hard graft. Coca-Cola works well with a toothbrush or scrubbing pad.

I don't normally have problems with rust on my bikes but I went out for a pre-Christmas dinner ride once, rushed home and put the bike away without cleaning it; within 24 hours the result was a rusty chain and various other rusty bike bits. The salt that the councils put down on the roads at this time of year is incredibly corrosive. I'd suggest giving your bike a wash after every ride in the winter. You don't need to polish it, but you do need to get all the salty grit off it.

Get into the habit of lots of TLC .If your not riding clean it .You know it makes sense .

Love it and you will benefit for years to come .Lavish lots of care .Nothing is too much trouble for the bike .

Probably salt from the roads. Give the chain a quick wipe, apply some lube and wipe again each wet ride during the winter when the roads are likely to be salted. Don't need to take long over it (it's cold and possibly dark so you won't want to anyway). Give any other bits that rust a quick squirt of GT85 or similar.

Get a bucket of hot water with car shampoo. Find an old hand floor brush with long soft bristles. Give the whole bike a thorough soaping and then rinse off. Dry the chain by running it through a cloth then lube it. It's the only way to get all the salt off it and keep it running nicely.

I keep all my bike stuff (and bikes) in the en suite bathroom, along with spare race wheels, wetsuits etc.

You can't go wrong if you keep it all inside.
