To live there?
I'd stay north of the Tweed - the Old Town has some great squares and tree lined streets but parking would be awkward in the summer when the tourists are about.
Alternative is to live further out [across the Scottish border] then you qualify for all the Scottish Government's free hand-outs including no/ reduced university fees even if studying in England!

East Coast trains to Edinburgh about 45 minutes and the south [Newcastle also about 45 minutes] are regular and fast so London is about 3 hours 45 minutes away.

Thanks, Archie.

MsM has one daughter, and grandchildren, in Inverness and a second daughter in London, so Berwick looks like a pretty good objective for my planned escape from wage slavery. Just about big enough to have all the essentials, housing costs much lower than in London, and with all that lovely countryside just waiting to be walked and cycled over...

Hmmm... Shrewsbury coming up on the inside as they dash for the line...

I'm unlikely to be attending university any time soon... but the Scottish government does seem to look after its older citizens reasonably well, something which is of increasing interest to me.

Isn't it rather difficult, given the different legal regimes, to sell a house in England in order to buy one in Scotland? Couldn't you find yourself in a very difficult situation if your sale in England fell through after you had committed yourself to a purchase in Scotland?

Rent temporarily... or even rent full time and live off the eventual capital from the sale so you could move easily again to somewhere new and exciting.... like Shrewsbury, or Truro....

This is a myth. Cash strapped councils are doing everything they can to wriggle out of providing care.

Thanks, reiver. It sounds worth going for a serious look, anyway. We plan to do that in October.

There hardly seems to be anywhere now that doesn't have a bit of a reputation for roughness. Lichfield (Lichfield!) is, or so I hear, a dreadful place on a Saturday night.

Luckily, most of my Saturday nights are spent at home, going to bed early before Sunday's exertions
