No explanation why but years ago I was sat in my living room one quiet evening and became aware of a hum...or maybe a soft buzz, very low pitched but there.
Cooked my ear...where IS that coming from ?. Walked round the room, listening intently, it's in this corner of the room but I couldn't pinpoint it.
Stood there, the noise is right in front of me it seems but I still can't pinpoint it. I'm looking at a painting on the wall ...I put my finger on the frame...the hum instantly stopped .
Background vibration from roads etc creating a resonance in an object maybe ?
My boys can't go into our Homebase as they hear a screechy sound that hurts their ears. I've asked the store whether they have one of those sound emitter things that stop young people hanging around, but they say no.
I walked into a music store in Manchester about 30 years ago and was assaulted by an intense high frequency sound. I complained to the staff and they said that they had forgotten to switch off some part of their security system. They flicked a switch behind the counter and the noise stopped. It was much higher in pitch than 15.625 kHz (line output transformer whistle frequency of CRT TVs) so older ears probably would not be able to hear it. I certainly wouldn't now - I can't hear much above 10 kHz these days.

My mum aged 86 was being driven batty by it. Turning the power off at the mains made no difference. Curiously she hasn't mentioned it for a while now, maybe because she's got other things on her mind.
I was going to suggest killing the power, thinking it might be 50hz ac frequency.

extractor fans, leaking pipes (underground), hard drives in set top boxes, fluorescent lights "singing", various electronic devices -- all sorts of noise sources. I used to have an alarm clock with Flip-over numbers like the info boards they used to have at airports and stations - that made a strange creaking noise 24x7. Killing power eliminates most of those.
hmmm, do noise cancelling headphones do anything?

It's the Chinese they have a tunnel boring machine and they are coming to invade the UK, I saw a film on the telly along time ago so it must be true.

Oh my mistake the film was Battle Beneath the Earth and they were invading the US
I think the Mexicans might be borrowing that soon if Trump gets his way!

It doesn't seem to have occurred to him that there are some excellent tunnel builders out there ...

Funny you should say that. Tin hat merchants will tell you all about man made tunnel / cave systems that are being constructed by 'them', because the saucer lizards have told 'them' to get ready for what's coming, but utmost secrecy has to be maintained, lest the proles get wind of it and start revolting. It seems 'they'need to work out a way to do it more quietly.

I have a hissing sound in my ears, but that is me, I know.

I do hear a far off hum depending on where I am, but at our old house, you had a hum all night long. Turns out it was nearby Agreko testing their generators.

At our current house, there is still a similar hum, but I have still to establish what it is.

We have it here in Bristol too. Usually around 3-5am, I nip to the loo for a pee and then when I'm trying to nod off again, I swear that I can just make out a very low bass hum. It's very faint and sounds a bit like the local boy racers out in their souped up tin cans on wheels with a bass stereo capable of causing a small earthquake. My neighbours are sometimes noisy and like to listen to Ibiza 2016 Summer at 3am in the morning with the bass turned up. The 'hum' I can just make out is rather like a booming bass sound, low frequency and barely audible, but there nonetheless.
