Thinking about a tour of Denmark by recumbent trike this August so I checked the cost of the ferry.

A foot passenger is £5 each way - super cheap.
Add a bike and it is still only £12 each way - unbelievably cheap!

So I tried to book it. Oh dear you have to book a cabin - cheapest one (3 people) is £350 each way.
So cost is now £800 return if only me in the cabin (almost the cost of an around the world airplane ticket) so completely out of the question.

Anyone else thinking of going to Denmark who would be prepared to share a cabin with a loony stranger? I was thinking of outbound about 7th/8th August and return 25th Aug but willing to jiggle dates to a mutually agreeable compromise.

hi.. I tried to do this run last summer...go across to Hook of holland and come back via Esjberg/Denmark riding up the north sea cycle route but the danish ferry peeps told me they wouldnt take a single passenger in summer! I suggested they could put me in with any other single passenger male or female but they wouldnt take a single booking! Unbelievalbe  I ve got other plans this summer (the length of Scotland) but I wish you luck finding someone coz it sounds great

I tried to book for two of us with bikes last year and they said they wouldn't take bookings without a motor vehicle in August, e mailed 'customers services' a couple of times but never heard back.
We paid £40 in total for Dover - Dunkirk and did a tour of Flanders instead.

Hello,
I'm planning on moving to Denmark in mid to late May and will be renting a van to bring my things over. Like other people on this forum have mentioned, the problem is renting the cabins and not being able to get a cheaper place as a single person. I am willing to take your bikes in the van if you want to split the cost of renting the cabin. We could discuss the possibility of going one way or a return journey. I would be in DK for a week, which would allow for a good trip around DK.
Please get in touch ASAP as I need to book the ferry tickets for a reasonable price.

Errrm; original post was made in June 2012, for travel dates in August last year. Crazy prices on some of these ferries now, and they wonder why people take the flying option where possible! Personally I would much rather take the ferry, but the prices are just stupid for some routes.

The solution we have found is to take the Harwich/Hook of Holland ferry and drive up.
It's about the same door to door time
And about one third of the cost, even if you include the extra fuel

To anyone trying to get to Denmark. Be aware that DFDS ferries also run a freight service that you Can try. I sent from Esbjerg to immingham and returnere with my motorbike. Much cheaper and nicer than the tourist ferry. It is worth a try.

I live in Denmark if anyone needs a floor for a night. I am glose to haderslev.
