We love our cast iron chiminea, which has been going strong now for 7 years with absolutely bugger all maintenance. It's lovely to relax to the sound of the crackling logs, as the sun sets with a beer in hand, very much like the vibe of a proper camp fire. They DO smoke quite a bit if you load them with timber, until they get up to proper furnace temperature, then they settle down. Never tried using ours as a BBQ, a bit too small really.
Heatwise, as long as you buy one with a seriously heavywright chimney section, they do radiate a fair bit of warmth for when the chill sets into the evening air. But they're nowhere near as effective as those ugly gas-fired patio heaters.
