We love our cast iron chiminea, which has been going strong now for 7 years with absolutely bugger all maintenance. It's lovely to relax to the sound of the crackling logs, as the sun sets with a beer in hand, very much like the vibe of a proper camp fire. They DO smoke quite a bit if you load them with timber, until they get up to proper furnace temperature, then they settle down. Never tried using ours as a BBQ, a bit too small really.

Heatwise, as long as you buy one with a seriously heavywright chimney section, they do radiate a fair bit of warmth for when the chill sets into the evening air. But they're nowhere near as effective as those ugly gas-fired patio heaters.

I am planning a garden wall project and was considering building some sort of outdoor hearth with a chimney in the wall.

They are quite nice to sit around when you have people over but it does beg the question - why not just go indoors?

We have a vast terracotta one, it's lasted a decade outside without any ill effects, it's big enough to do a BBQ on, we even have a stew attachment which have never used. To be fair we also have a small cast iron pot bellied BBQ which is actually better

The Chimneia is also great for loading up with well dried logs and sitting around until the early hours

If you are after the best of both worlds google "Ozpig"
