Rush-'hour' runs from about 4pm to around 7pm. You can do the same journey anytime with the same amount of traffic.

There is no gung-ho-ness in my approach to junctions, I assure you. I've been cycling in London for 30 years and am still here ...

Navigation by backstreets is much simpler than many imagine, so long as you know where the main roads are.

Well, I've decided to take my slicked-up mtb instead of the road bike and hit the Sustrans trails. It's going to be a long day at about 175 miles... I've done the route on bikeroutetoaster if anyone is interested: http://bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=594653

Thanks for the tips.

Why cycle across London when you can take your bike on the tube? Entering and exiting at surface stations for example Richmond and Upminister. Epping is probably helpful for you and like Richmond, (if you use the Thames) still rural.

It's a bit more complicated than that...
Not so Cat, bikes are not permitted on tube journeys that go underground.....
Only on the deep tube lines (Central, Bakerloo, Northern, Jubilee, and I've probably forgotten one). On the sub-surface lines, including the District from Richmond to Upminster, it's fine.

How long did that take? That's a seriously complex off-roady route! One of the advantages of the main roads is that you can get decent speeds up.
