I've got a niece who's a drama queen. We all hate her.

There are loads of them on here.

@Dave7 - hi, 30% is far too much! How old is your granddaughter? She might be better off going to drama school first and be properly launched into the profession.

I wouldn't pay more than 15% to an agent, though some charge up to 20% for eg film/tv. There is an awful lot of advice to give re the "biz" but knowing her age will help.

I run a theatre company. My experience is that most agents are useless, both to me and to their clients. I can't stand them. There are exceptions, but they are presumably the ones who can afford to be choosy. Most of the best performers we have employed have got the job without any assistance from their agents, but it doesn't stop them taking a fat cut of their not-very-lavish wage. It sort of depends on what kind of work she is looking for, as an agent will be more or less obligatory for mainstream/commercial work.
Hey, I didn't know you had a theatre company! - I was a producer as well as an actor till recently - mid-scale national touring which of course has now crashed as a market so I gave up. Still acting a bit.

She is 11 and does go to what you call drama school (not sure exactly what they call themselves) but they train in song/dance/acting etc. She has appeared "in public" in one of thier shows........ a musical version of Romeo & Juliet (even if "the public" was mainly made up of parents & grand parents etc^_^)

Oh I see, really young. I'm not an expert on that age group at all, though I stick by saying that 30% is too much. I suggest getting in touch with Equity and seeing what they say - there are rules for young performers.

EDIT: http://www.equity.org.uk/home/

They may be able to point you in the right direction even if she isn't yet a member.
